Lighting the Way Together

Our PSHE curriculum follows a spiral structure, so everyone in school is taught the same topic simultaneously, developing and deepening their knowledge in an age-appropriate way.

Autumn 1 - Me and My Relationships

During the first term of the year, time is spent across school in helping children with the transition of moving classes. Combined with MyHappyMind, this term focuses on understanding feelings and how to manage individual feelings and promote positive relationships. Children are also encouraged to think about people who are important to them, and how these people keep them safe.

Autumn 2 - Valuing Difference

This topic focuses on the importance of uniqueness and difference, and encourages diversity. We celebrate our school community in this topic, by expressing our similarities and differences. We also raise awareness for Anti-bullying week and children across school are given opportunities for pupil voice.

Spring 1 - Keeping safe

In Spring 1, we encourage the children to think about how they can stay safe physically and online. Local PCSO's have visited school to speak to Year 6 around social media, and staying positive and safe online. Most classes also took part in an online workshop with Yorkshire Water, providing information about being safe around bodies of water, particularly during the Winter season.

Spring 2 - Growing and Changing

In the Growing and Changing topic, children across school are taught about their bodies and how their bodies change as they get older. This topic is sensitive to the safeguarding agenda, and following government guidance, all children (from Year 1 upwards) are taught the names of body parts using scientific language to normalise their vocabulary (see the vocabulary sheet on our website).

This topic also prepares children in Key Stage 2 for puberty, in advance of these changes happening to them, while providing them with a safe space to ask questions.

Summer 1 - Rights and Respect

While the whole school year draws on the importance of British values, this half term focuses heavily on the British values impacting our school community the most. We spend a lot of time defining and understanding "mutual respect and tolerance", and considering the different scenarios in which we can implement this.

Summer 2 - Being My Best

Time in spent during this half term to encourage children to think about their best qualities. This topic also prepares children for the transition into the next year group. Along with MyHappyMind, times is spent with Year 6 to help them with their transition into high school.

Special Events

Throughout the year, we also have topical weeks and days where we celebrate our diversity and raise awareness around topics relevant to our school community. These include Anti-bullying week, Safer Internet Day and Refugee Week. During the school year, we have had visitors to promote positive values and characteristics, including Halifax Panthers, local PCSOs and Gladiator Steel.
